100% of its unsold safe to eat food, Starbucks has pledged to donate it to those in need instead of having it go in the trash.

They have partnered with Food Donation Connection and the nonprofit, Feeding America, whereby food will be picked up from Starbucks stores each day in refrigerated vans and redistributed to food banks.

The foods included are the breakfast sandwiches, paninis, salads, and pre packaged meals filled with snacks like vegetables and hummus, fruit and wraps.

Starbucks says the program called FoodShare, will provide 5 million meals in the first year and nearly 50 million by 2021, when it expects to reach 100% donation rate.

Starbucks is hoping to inspire other restaurants and even have their refrigerated vans be available to those restaraunts who want to also divert away from food waste.

A Government goal was set last year to cut food waste in half by 2030. Feeding America estimates the US wastes 70 billion pounds of food every year.
