Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – “Show a people as one thing, and one thing only, over and over again and that is what they become.”
Ms. Adichie is an intelligent, amazing inspirational woman, and a Nigerian author. The is a quote by Chinua Achebe, from the interview by Jerome Brooks titled “The Art of Fiction No. 139″ Achebe states, ” If you don’t like someone’s story, write your own.” i think this is exactly what ms. Andichie set out as her life mission to do and in turn teach others to enable them to write their own stories as well and not allow the stereotypical story to be the single story. Ms. Adichie herself composed the following quote summarizing what stereotyping does,”Show a people as one thing, and one thing only, over and over again and that is what they become.” i was quite taken by this and i understood her as trying to show how if there is only one way of describing something, and that way is continuously used as the primary source of describing that one thing, then people are going to most likely think well that’s the only way it has been described, so that must be the only way that this particular thing can be viewed. THEY SAY KNOWLEDGE IS POWER AND WHAT WE DON’T KNOW HURTS US. “The problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
In this video, Ms. Adichie talks about the dangers that befall hearing only a single story about another person or country, and how this leads to the risk of critically misunderstanding the depth, beauty, intelligence, and humanity of this person or country. This was very insightful, and i found myself very inspired.
